Virgil Raymond Sampson was born in Strong, Maine on April 29, 1924 and died on December 17, 2020. He was predeceased by his wife of many years, Ruth Mills Sampson, by Ruth Caton (his second wife), and by parents Guy Raymond Sampson and Margaret Ellen Hawbold Rhodenizer. He is survived by his three children Terry Brown (Tom), Robert Sampson (Debbie), and Dawn DeMarra (Dean), and by grandchildren Christi-Lynn Martin, Michael Brown, Allison Brown, Riley Sampson, Rebecca Sampson, Darcy Craig, Dylan DeMarra, and Daniel DeMarra.
Virgil and Ruth were married in 1947 and, after working for some years in Maine, traveled to California where he trained as a machinist and, eventually, became an expert Toolmaker and Tool & Die designer. After working many years for General Dynamics (San Diego), the family moved back to Maine and settled in Auburn, where Virgil established a tool design group at the local General Electric facility. After his retirement, he and Ruth spent winters pulling a trailer through the southwestern USA and summers in Maine, using Steep Falls Maine as a base.
We remember Virgil for his love of family, his love of travel and the outdoors, his technical skills and common sense, and his willingness to help anyone. Virgil was a loyal friend and he maintained many friends on both sides of this continent. We loved him and will miss him.
No services are planned at this time. A graveside service will be planned for July, 2021.
