Joyce Sands Danis, 88, of Biddeford went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2020, after a long illness at Southridge Rehabilitation. Born January 28, 1932, in Biddeford, she was the beloved daughter of Lawrence and Viola Sands Boothby. She graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1950.
Joyce was eager to travel, and she decided to travel to the West Coast to attend Murphy Business School in North Hollywood, CA, where she graduated in 1960. She worked in Sylmar, CA at the Aline View Hospital. She returned home to Maine and continued her education at the Maine School of Practical Nursing. She then moved to the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing (now CMMC). She completed her education in 1978 and rejoined the work force as a Registered Nurse. She was passionate about providing her patients comfort and care during some of the hardest days of their lives. She retired in 1991 from Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
Joyce was married to Roland R. Danis, and from this union came their two children. Joyce was an only child and, knowing the importance of community and family, she decided to include her cousin’s children in every family event, just as her cousin’s parents included her. She and her family made sure to cheer on the Maine Mariners and University of Maine Black Bears hockey teams whenever they could. She also enjoyed watching Boston Celtics basketball, and she was a proud New England sports fan.
Joyce’s faith led her to a life of public service, and she thrived knowing that she could provide closure and guidance to those in need. During the times when Joyce wasn’t working, she engaged her community through her volunteer work. She led the Seekers Bible Study group at the Bible Baptist Church in Saco. She was a devoted Baptist, and she happily shared her time with the Christian Civic League of Maine. She also volunteered with the Alumni Association at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Joyce later joined the Order of the Eastern Star Annette Chapter #184. She enjoyed crafting so she spent time knitting mittens and slipper socks for the Head Start Program. She was also involved in the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) through which she worked with the Hot Meals Program.
Joyce is survived by her loving daughter, Patria Morin; her granddaughters, Kristen and her husband Eric Perkins, Jessica Danis, and Sara Danis; her grandsons, Marco and his wife Carol Morin, Stephan and his wife Jennifer Morin, and Carl and his wife Barbara Morin; her former husband Roland Danis; her cousin Barbara Libby (wife of Donald); her nephews Fred and his wife Beth Libby, Phil and his wife Michelle Boisjoly, Robert Boisjoly and his husband Brian Clevenger; her nieces Carol Boisjoly (wife of Bruce) and Judy Libby (wife of Frank); 8 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren; a large host of great-nieces and great-nephews; and two very dear friends, Hugette Dion and Jeannine Stevens.
