Joan H. Stephenson, 86, of Arundel, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3, 2021 after a series of illnesses. Born in October of 1934, she was the daughter of Irving "Bump" Darius and Jessie Gibbs Hadley in Swampscott, MA. She graduated from Swampscott High School and Bradford Junior College, and worked for many years in the Kennebunk school system.
Her greatest love and accomplishment was her family, and she is survived by her son Henry D. "Chip" Stephenson III (Arundel, ME); daughter Karen D. Stephenson and her husband Michael Wnek of Scarborough, her beloved grandson Braeden Hadley Stephenson (Arundel, ME), and his Mom, Margo; her brother Irving "Buddy" Lincoln, his wife Patricia Bauer Hadley; her sister-in-law, Marcia T. Harrison (Peabody, MA), niece, Leslie Harrison (Windsor, CT), and nephews Greg Hadley (Woodstock, VT), Todd Hadley (Fairport, NY), Geoff Hadley (Littleton, MA), Eric Hadley (Acton, MA), and Richie Hadley (Denver, CO).
Joan loved to entertain and she cared deeply about presentation, from her lipstick and outfit to her table setting, presentation mattered. She was rarely without make up, a snazzy scarf and just the right piece of jewelry. She had a knack for creativity that she expressed and shared through her jewelry, painting, and arts and crafts. She also enjoyed decorating, gardening, and bargain hunting, and she was an avid reader. In addition to her many talents and hobbies, she loved animals and welcomed many pets throughout her life.
Joan had an easy laugh and was always ready with a smile and a hug (and a gentle nudge where it was needed). She was caring, compassionate, and generous. She was a devoted mother and friend who touched many lives along the way with her kindness and humor. She loved spending time at the beach and the lake, often with an umbrella drink and always with cocktail napkins.
Joan was immensely proud of her country, her children, and her grandson, and leaves behind a deep legacy of beautiful memories. She endured a lot and showed great strength and fortitude even as her health declined. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be scheduled later this summer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Safe Haven Humane Society, Wounded Warrior Project, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
