George Henry Richards Jr., 86, of Saco died at the Cape Memory Care facility in Cape Elizabeth. He was born in Waterboro on May 14, 1934 to George H. Richards Sr. and Edith Robinson.
George knew early in his life that he wanted to be in the military, so he left school a little early to join the Marine Corps in September of 1952. He served for three years and received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Medal and the National Defense Medal. Upon leaving the Marines, he brought his skill and training to the Old Orchard Beach Police Department, he stayed there for twelve years. In this time, he raised four beautiful and loving children and married Lanora B. (Blaksley) Richards. He later decided to move to the Kennebunk Police Department and stayed there for six years until his retirement in 2008.
George raised his children with love and discipline, he instilled in them the importance of supporting and serving your country, they took his lesson to heart and all decided to serve in our Armed Forces. George was a devoted member of the VFW American Legion.
George’s legacy lives on through his four children; George R. Richards, Daniel A. Richards, Jason A. Richards and Jennifer A. Richards. Aside from his children, George is survived by a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services for George will be held at the family discretion and an inurnment ceremony is to be held at the Southern Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Springvale, ME.
