George Roger Bergeron, 88, of Kennebunkport, ME, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2020 at Avita of Wells. Born on October 21, 1931 in Naples, ME he was the son of Joseph A. and Lucia Bergeron. He was one of eight children.
George was educated by the Kennebunkport Public School system, he left in his senior year in December of 1950 to join the United States Navy. While there he earned the Naval Occupation Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. He served on the USS Glennon (DD-840) as an Infantryman. He served on the open seas for three years before being honorably discharged in 1954.
After serving in Korea, George met Claire. Soon after, they married in 1957 and began a whirlwind romance.
George was a proud American and after serving his country on the ocean, he decided to take his love for his country to the skies as he joined the United States Air Force in April of 1956. He spent four years as a Tow Reel Specialist and achieved the rank of a Third-Class Airman in the 4756th Squadron. While there he received his High School Diploma as well as the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal. He worked on the Tyndall Air Force Base in the Air Defense Wing in the Weapons Division until his honorable discharge in April of 1960.
In 1959, George became a father. He and his family lived in Florida for a very short time after the birth of his daughter then they moved back to Biddeford Pool, Maine. George and Claire separated in 1969 and co-parented as they raised their daughter Danna. As he stepped into the role of a father, George took an interest in Stock Car Racing and local sports. He attended the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. He married Carol Giguere, they were together until their divorce in 1989. He also joined the Rochester, NH Elks Club and remained a member for many years. After years of reflecting on his time in the military, George decided to join the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Welder, he stayed there until his retirement.
George is described as being a convivial and loving man, he dedicated his life to his country and his girls. His legacy continues through his daughter, Danna Smail and her husband Duane of Lyman; grandchildren, Darci Fournier and her husband Mark of Alfred, Josh Smail and his wife Shelly of Manchester, NH; as well as his great-grandchildren Halleigh and Jarrett Fournier; his brother, Paul Bergeron and his wife Faye of Kennebunkport and sister Mildred Cluff of Kennebunkport. As well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Aside from his parents, George was pre-deceased by his siblings; Henry Bergeron, Lucien Bergeron and Irene Kirkstead, Maryanne Harrington, Claudette Matthews.
