Donald R. Winterhalter

May 4, 1955 ~ February 20, 2021 (age 65)

Donald R. Winterhalter, 65 years of age, passed away after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer.

Born to Warren and Martha (Roth) Winterhalter in Hempstead, NY, Don and his family raised, bred, and showed their beloved Golden Retrievers.  Following his passion for mathematics and science, Don graduated from New York Institute of Technology where he had an aptitude for computer programming, communication skills, and the esthetics of artistic design.  After college he began his lifelong quest to create technologies to improve life tasks or make them more efficient.

Don worked at Wang Laboratories as an R & D engineer for 7 years.  He founded 2 companies; Aptitune and Aptilight.  In his own words, he “found an interesting niche for myself as sort of a digital sculptor.”   For 40 years, Don was involved in the performance and tuning of major operating systems used throughout the world.  He was the original author of SarCheck, a popular and commercially successful performance analysis utility.  Don spoke regularly at trade shows and to user groups for many years.

Don did not reserve his inquisitive and curious nature to the realm of the business world.  His hobbies included photography and beer making.  According to friends and family, Don could turn making dinner into a science experiment.  Averse to following recipes, most of his dinner-time experiments turned out delicious meals.

Friends remember Don’s wit, insight, and his broad and constant decency.  He turned his struggle with his disease into a learning experience for others by sharing thoughtful postings on Facebook.  One friend summed it up, “One in a million, our Don.”

He is survived by his wife, Diane Beaupre, of Biddeford, Maine, his mother-in-law, Lucille, and father-in-law, Norman Beaupre, also of Biddeford, and his sister, Marjorie Wharton of Allentown Pennsylvania.

In keeping with Don's quest for learning and knowledge, he has made an anatomical donation to the University of New England's medical school.  Due to COVID, there will not be any wake or service.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter or animal rescue league or Southern Maine Hospice Scarborough, ME
