Raymond Dechene

Birth Date: Aug. 25, 1923

Death Date: Jun. 18, 2012

Raymond H. Dechene, 88, of Biddeford died Monday, June 18, 2012 at St. Andre’s Health Care Facility after a brief illness. He was born in Biddeford on August 25, 1923 a son of Henri and Laura Couture Dechene. He was educated in Biddeford schools and graduated from Biddeford High School.

Mr. Dechene served with the US Coast Guard (Merchant Marines) during WWII as a Refrigeration Engineer. He later served in the US Army.

On February 4, 1950 he married Rita D. Tourigny in St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford.

Mr. Dechene worked 4 years with the Saco-Lowell Shop in the Spindle Department. He then worked 30 years with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as Power Plant Foreman retiring in 1983. In retirement he worked in utility and ground maintenance at the Kimball Health Center in Saco and delivered Meals On Wheels. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the American Legion, NARFE & AARP.

Ray’s joys were simple; a day puttering in the yard or around his home, which he built for his family, was a perfect 10 on his scale. An exceptional morning consisted of going to breakfast with the boys or his daughter and then returning home to his wife and home. He enjoyed tending to his landscaping, flower and vegetable gardens. His knowledge of all aspects of home maintenance was expansive and everyone looked to him for advice and assistance. Ray was a kind and gentle soul, always putting the needs of his family and others first because, to quote his last words, he himself was always “all set”. He loved to relax with his newspaper and coffee, watch local sports and was an avid Red Sox fan. He will be hugely missed by everyone.

He was predeceased by a brother, Marcel Dechene (1981) and three sisters, Juliette Pyer (2004), Irene Beaulieu (2009) and Lillian Lavigne (2009).

Surviving are:

his wife of 62 years of Biddeford

his daughter: Joyce Courtois & her husband Gerard of Biddeford

a sister: Lucille Gagnon & her husband Robert of Biddeford

Several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to St. Andre’s Health Care, especially Sherry, Sarah, Andrea and all the CNA’s for their kind and compassionate care.
