Kay Hamilton Mewer Spear, 83 of Old Orchard Beach passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, July 17, 2017.
Kay was born in Biddeford at the old Webber Hospital, the daughter of Clinton and Violet Hamilton Mewer. She graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School, Class of 1952. She then went on to Nasson College and then worked for the family business at Montrose E. Hill Insurance Company for many years.
Kay was very active in the community and volunteered for many different organizations over the years. Old Orchard Beach Rescue, The Red Cross, Eastern Star, Hope Circle, Fish and Game Association, the Saco Grange (where she met her future husband), the Local Chapter of the Red Hats “the Sassy Beach Dolls”.
She married Robert “Bob” Jason Spear on June 15, 1963, and they both joined the Saco Seventh-Day Adventist Church in September 1970 after participating in a stop smoking program put on by the church.
She quickly became active in the church’s community services program, and then later on with the fundraiser citrus fruit program for the, Florence M. Lombard church school. She loved her customers that bought the boxes of oranges and grapefruits, and who affectionately called her the Orange Lady.
Kay had many gifts; one was her outgoing friendly personality. She never met a stranger; they were just friends that she hadn't met yet! She was a talented cake decorator and had the artistic ability to draw pictures on tote bags, aprons, seashells and the inside of pistachio nut shells. She loved to give them away and make people smile and laugh. Anyone who knows her, knows that she was extremely good at making people laugh!
In her later years she had many health issues, but it never slowed her down for long. She loved all her doctors and nurses who have taken care of her over the years. She was particularly close to her visiting nurse Lucy, who would often go above and beyond, because the feeling was mutual.
Kay was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister Shirley Tanner and brother Roland Mewer.
She is survived by her sister JoAnne Mewer Pritchard, Sister-in-law Phylis Williams, Daughter Beverly Hall and Husband James, her 2 beloved grandchildren Andrew Jason and Catherine A., daughter Becky Spear and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and many more friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2 PM at the Faith Chapel Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 46 Cleveland Street Saco, Maine.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made in Kay’s memory to be used for the church’s hearing impaired system. Donations can be sent to Faith Chapel Seventh-Day Adventist Church PO Box 1298 Saco, ME 04072.
