Earlyne M. Blackstone, 86, of Saco, ME passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2018 at St. Andre’s Healthcare facility in Biddeford, ME. Born on Oct. 21, 1931 in Caribou, ME, she was the eldest of seven children born to Earl and Alice (Thomas) Blackstone. She graduated from Caribou High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maine, Orono. She worked as a credit manager for the J.J. Newbury Co in Caribou and as a sales associate for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Presque Isle, ME. As a social worker, her professional career was spent primarily in Kennebec and Somerset Counties in Maine for the Maine Department of Human Services and later at the Maine Children’s Home in Waterville and Augusta, ME. While at Maine Children’s Home, she developed and implemented the Teen Parent Program in 1975 in conjunction with local school departments, a program which continues to the present time.
Later she developed a private consulting practice with other agencies, providing professional training for social service providers in other parts of Maine. Her colleague and friend, M. Doris Comtois, joined her practice in 1983, providing private counseling and parenting education skills for families in other agencies, schools and churches.
Upon retiring to Saco in 1993, Earlyne was employed part-time as a Discharge Planner for St. Andre’s Healthcare Facility in Biddeford, ME. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for St. Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach, ME and as a Secretary to the Board of Ocean Park East, a condo association, where she lived. Later, upon moving to Wardwell Retirement Home in Saco in 1999, she served as the secretary on their Board of Directors.
Earlyne’s greatest love was always for people in all stations of life. She assisted many with her financial knowledge and ability to access services. She regarded people as God’s greatest creation and helped all, from young children to the elderly.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Earl & Alice Blackstone of Caribou and Brunswick, her sister Barbara Anguish of Brunswick, her brother Vernon Blackstone of Caribou, her brother Roger Blackstone of Winthrop, her sister Ruth Chamberland of Bowdoin, her colleague and friend, Doris Comtois of Saco, and a special nephew, Scott Blackstone, Winthrop. She is survived by her sister Joyce Churchill (Robert) of Fort Fairfield, ME and her sister Phyllis Blackstone, of Brunswick, ME.
